How the Calculator Works

The CS17 Tax Calculator is designed to calculate common GST, VAT and sales-tax amounts.

The calculator does not decide whether an item or service is taxable. It calculates the tax amount using the rate you select.

Tip: Always confirm that the selected tax rate applies to the particular goods, services and location involved in your transaction.

Calculation Types

Add Tax

Use Add Tax when the amount you have does not already include tax.

The calculator adds the selected tax rate to the original amount.

Example:
Amount before tax: $100.00
Tax rate: 10%
Tax: $10.00
Total including tax: $110.00
Remove Tax

Use Remove Tax when the amount already includes tax and you want to calculate the original amount before tax.

Example:
Amount including tax: $110.00
Tax rate: 10%
Amount before tax: $100.00
Tax included: $10.00
Tax Only

Use Tax Only when you only want to calculate the amount of tax that applies to an amount before tax.

Example:
Amount before tax: $100.00
Tax rate: 10%
Tax amount: $10.00

Supported Countries

The Tax Calculator currently supports a selection of major countries and tax systems.

Australia

Australia uses Goods and Services Tax, commonly known as GST.

The standard Australian GST rate used by the calculator is 10%.

New Zealand

New Zealand uses Goods and Services Tax, or GST.

The standard GST rate is available in the country selector.

United States

The United States uses sales tax rather than a national GST or VAT.

Sales tax can vary between states, counties, cities and other local jurisdictions.

Select the relevant U.S. state. The calculator will display the programmed state sales-tax rate.

You can then enter an additional local rate if required.

U.S. sales-tax rules vary significantly by location and by the type of goods or services being sold. Always confirm the correct local tax rate before relying on the calculation.
Canada

Canada can use several different tax systems depending on the province or territory.

These can include:

  • GST — Goods and Services Tax
  • HST — Harmonized Sales Tax
  • PST — Provincial Sales Tax
  • QST — Quebec Sales Tax
  • RST — Retail Sales Tax

Select the appropriate province or territory to display the programmed reference rate.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom uses Value Added Tax, known as VAT.

The calculator includes commonly used VAT options such as standard, reduced and zero rates.

Ireland

Ireland uses VAT and has several tax-rate categories.

Select the rate that applies to your transaction before calculating.

Singapore

Singapore uses Goods and Services Tax, or GST.

South Africa

South Africa uses Value Added Tax, commonly known as VAT.

United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates uses VAT.

The calculator includes the standard VAT rate and a zero-rate option.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia uses Value Added Tax, or VAT.

Japan

Japan uses Consumption Tax.

Standard and reduced tax-rate options are available where applicable.

India

India uses Goods and Services Tax, or GST.

India has several GST rate categories, so the calculator allows you to choose from commonly used tax-rate levels.

Indian GST can depend on the type of product or service and other tax rules. Confirm the correct GST classification before relying on the result.

Custom Tax Rate

The calculator includes a Custom Rate option.

This can be useful when:

  • You already know the exact applicable rate.
  • A special reduced rate applies.
  • A local tax rate differs from the programmed rate.
  • A temporary tax rate is being used.
  • You are checking a historical or special transaction.

When a custom rate is entered, it overrides the normal selected rate for that calculation.

United States Local Sales Tax

U.S. sales tax is different from many national GST and VAT systems.

The calculator provides a state tax rate and allows you to manually add a local rate.

Example:
State rate: 6.25%
Local rate: 2.00%
Combined rate: 8.25%

The local rate may represent county, city or other local sales taxes.

Tax Rate Updates

Tax rates can change over time.

The CS17 Tax Calculator includes a tax-rate update system that checks the configured official or reference tax sources periodically.

The calculator is currently configured to perform a source check approximately every 7 days while the website is being used.

You can also use the Check Tax Rates Now button to manually request a tax-rate source check.

Why aren't rates automatically replaced from any percentage found on a government page?

Government websites can contain standard rates, reduced rates, zero rates, historic rates and proposed rates on the same page. Automatically copying an unidentified percentage could produce an incorrect tax calculation. The calculator therefore keeps previously validated rate information rather than blindly changing rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator tell me whether an item is taxable?

No.

The calculator calculates tax using the rate you select. It does not determine whether a particular product, service or transaction is taxable.

Why are there different rates for some countries?

Some countries use different rates depending on the product or service.

These may include standard, reduced and zero-rated categories.

Why does the United States need a local rate?

Many U.S. states allow counties, cities and other local authorities to impose additional sales tax.

This means the actual tax rate can differ between locations within the same state.

Can I use my own tax rate?

Yes.

Enter your percentage into the Custom Rate field and the calculator will use that rate instead of the normal preset rate.

Are the calculations rounded?

Currency results are generally displayed using the normal number of decimal places for the selected currency.

Small rounding differences may occur compared with accounting systems or tax-authority calculations.

Can I use the calculator on my phone?

Yes.

The Tax Calculator has been designed to work on desktop computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

Do I need to create an account?

No.

You can use the CS17 Tax Calculator without creating an account.

Is this tax advice?

No.

CS17 Tax Calculator provides general calculation tools only and does not provide tax, accounting, financial or legal advice.

Important Tax Information

Tax rules can vary depending on country, state, province, city, transaction type, goods, services, customer location and other circumstances.

Tax rates can also change.
